Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The 6-In-1 Educational Solar -- Robotic Kit is an excellent beginner building kit designed to teach how solar power is used to drive a small motor. Children use the 21 snap together parts (no tools required) to build six different working models including an airboat, car, windmill, puppy, and two different airplanes. Solar building kits teach children the benefits of solar energy, while they create a toy that is both fun to play with and requires no batteries. Educators, science museums, and hobbyists will surely appreciate the durability, educational value, and endless hours of amusement for children and adults too! This is a beginner kit recommended for ages 10 and up.

5 out of 5 stars Solar Toy   October 4, 2009

Excellent item. Fun for at least 2 hours assembling and disassembling trying out other designs and a great value!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great for people who value effort and dare go outside   April 15, 2010

People who know that rewards come from effort will find this solar educational toy to be good value and good fun, and also good education. As other reviewers mention (and as is clearly marked) this has small parts, and needs assembly. People who like the easy way out will find this does not work for them.

Not only is this "solar robot kit" not that expensive, "ready to run" alternatives cost several times over, and are not at all that educational really: the need to put effort, and attention to detail, are good educational points in themselves, besides the physics and electronics, and the actually being able to see how it all fits together to work.

BTW, this is a *solar* item. It is NOT designed to work under electric lamps. To get full results you may have to go outside, another big plus in itself.

Highly recommended for homeschoolers. Maybe 10 years old is about the youngest I would give this to, 12 being about ideal.

4 out of 5 stars Smaller than expected   September 19, 2009

This was purchased for my 8 year old son. It was smaller than I imagined, but still worthwhile. We made the car, and it fits in the palm of my son's hand. He did need some help assembling it, and will most likely need assistance to change it from one configuration to another. It seem at bit on the fragile side, so it is better for solo play than with friends. He really likes that it is solar, but if it does not have direct sun or strong indoor light, it doesn't have enough power to move. Now the child want a solar flashlight to shine on his solar car.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and great way to learn about solar/energy power   March 3, 2010

From my 9 year old son: "With this toy you can make 6 different items, but you have to be careful because the pieces are fragile. When you re-assemble it into another shape, one of the pieces broke when I pulled a piece off, I pulled it too hard (I learned this the hard way because when the piece broke, I couldn't fix it) because the parts are fragile. It's fun to put together although I recommend an adult's help because the gearbox is tricky to put together."

From my 9 year old daughter: "This toy is fun to put together but don't forget they need to be in direct sunlight to work. We live in San Diego where it is mostly sunny, so we can play with ours outside, but you cannot play with it inside unless you have a very sunny room---but this is what teaches you how solar power works!"

From me: "I bought this toy because it is a Top Doctor Toy winner. I thought the toy was great fun, they learned a lot, but I was surprised that the toy is only 2 inches long. Again, this is a good lesson about solar power and the idea of the size of the solar collector and the energy output.

3 out of 5 stars Great concept - Bad Execution.   March 15, 2010

The product is not very durable. I found the solar panel barely has enough oomph to power the motor. It was disappointing after spending the time putting it together.
