5 out of 5 stars Nerf is for big boys too   July 23, 2007

I'm definitely too old to be writing this review. Old enough to know better than to state my real age.

I own 3 of these. They're like potato chips, you can't have just 1. It's true, it's a little on the weak side straight out of the box, but Hasbro was thinking ahead. I suspect it was intentionally designed with the modder in mind because there's not a drop of glue anywhere. Just remove the screws and open the case. Once inside, you only need to add an extra spring. Don't worry about removing the restrictor. You'll get plenty of range with just the spring mod. My favorite source of springs? The dollar store. Buy yourself a toilet paper roll dispenser, remove the spring and insert it in tandem with the stock spring in the piston. Voila, you have 100 ft range. (Tish, that's French!) Okay, maybe not. I never measured, but I know I can shoot from one end of my apartment to the other with a nearly flat trajectory. That's easily 30 ft with virtually no drop. I'm sure you could get it to fly farther with a slight incline. If you need help with the mods, just google "nerf mods" and you'll find plenty of helpful sites. I don't recommend any in particular, but they're all more or less equivalent.

The most attractive feature, which drew me to it in the first place, is the clip-feed. Yes, it's prone to a bit of jamming if you're not careful. As long as you pull all the way back, and push all the way forward, with a smooth even stroke, you'll have no problems. How well you load the darts into the clips matter too. The common snag point is near the front of the clip so try to load them all the way back so the rear of the dart is flush against the flat surface of the magazine. Do that, and you shouldn't hit any problems. I like to quick cycle through my spares just for fun. I'm generally able to feed through 6 magazines without a jam. It's a shame Nerf doesn't sell spare magazines. Thankfully, they sell spare streamline darts. The extra range makes it very easy to lose darts.

The attachment that goes on the nose of the gun is pretty worthless for anything but spare parts. It's only there to qualify the CS-6's claim as the longest Nerf gun. It appears to add a touch of accuracy, but sacrifices a lot of yardage. I've never tried, but I suspect you could harvest the spring if you crack it open. There's some glue on this one, so you'll need to hack into it.

If you're lucky, you may be able to find the Wal-Mart exclusive package: a Long-shot with all the standard accessories + an exclusive "laser" sight. Look up Nite-shot if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Hopefully, Hasbro won't detune this model in the future. Nerf products have a tendency to become less potent with successive generations. After 2 or 3 generations, the popular Nite-Shot and Maverick are just shadows of their former glory because of the cheaper and/or thinner material they use.

One final warning for anyone considering modifying this gun. Do not attach the bolt lever until you're finished with your modifications. The big orange knobs on either side that cock and load the darts are designed to go on and stay on. I made the mistake of fully assembling it before deciding to modify. I had to force them apart which stripped some of the plastic inside the knob. If you want to see what the stock gun is capable of, just use the half of the lever that has the rod. This should be enough to draw the spring.

I don't condone modifying your toys. Especially because the final product tends to be a bit overpowered for smaller children. I accept no responsibility for product damage or bodily harm caused by this toy. I also apologize if I've repeated anything the other reviewers said. I honestly did not read more than a handful before I wrote this rant. I mean review.

5 stars for being the most entertaining toy I own, and I own many. Way too many.

3 stars for being a good teaching aide on the basics of Nerf modding.

4 stars for durability. I haven't broken anything yet, but as it goes with abused Nerf toys, something has to give eventually.

5 stars overall. I honestly cannot think of a more entertaining toy. The term toy excludes video games and airsoft.

UPDATE: As things normally go at Nerf HQ, they've watered down the Long-Shot. I recommend the new N-Strike CS-6 Recon which uses the same clip system, but also offers modularity.

UPDATE#2: Two have commented to point out that clips are available for sale separately. They're manufactured in a darker shade of orange and a harder kind of plastic than the ones that came with on my Longshots. These were released with the Recons. The harder plastic makes a louder clack when you aggressively insert them. The older yellower clips are softer so the clack is somewhat dampened.

The release of the CS-35 Raider Rapid Fire introduced the 35 shot drum to the Nerf market. As of now, the drum is not sold separately, but it's just a matter of time. In the meantime, nothing in my arsenal (or anyone else's in the office) beats a Recon with drum.

5 out of 5 stars It's completely awesome (if you know how to REALLY use it)   October 11, 2006

People have been complaining, "oh, the accuracy is bad!" "oh, it doesn't shoot far enough." Well, I own the blaster and I figured out a secret: when loading the darts into the "clip", the darts have a small hole in them. Put them into the clip with the hole facing downward. Then, it is INCREDIBLY accrurate, and shoots INCREDIBLY far!

Other than that, the gun has a few problems: 1)The bolt handle twists around, which is generally not a problem, but it sometimes slips out off your hand (not often). 2) When you pull the bolt handle back (btw, the bolt handle charges up the gun), you can hear all these things clicking. Though this is not neccisarily bad, but it seems like someday they will break.

The rapid reloading feature is great, the gun has an extra slot for the clip, and after you get used to it, it's really easy to use.

The scope doesn't zoom, but unlike everybody else's complaints, I find it quite useful. It has a little crosshair with elevation markers, so that you can shoot LONG distances and still aim accurately.

Although, for little kids, this may not be the greatest, because although not heavy, its large and cumbersome for small kids, even without the front end attachment (which doesn't help that much, by the way). Also, it's a little TOO realistic (considering it's bolt-action, clip fed, has a scope, bipod and adjustable stock), and, again, might not be good for small children (but, com'on, its blue with bright orange highlights!).

Summing it all up, THIS THING IS MORE THAN WORTH EVERY PENNY, as long as you know my secret!

Thank you,
Fragments of a Funky Llama

5 out of 5 stars Cool Gun!   November 18, 2006

This gun is pretty cool.
You might have already read that reaview with the secret and the holes facing down and all that crap!Since I know you didn't pay attention to it i'm going to tell you it WORKS.The gun is really cool, the scope can be put to great use(If you know how to use it!).The trick to using the scope is to make sure the dot is about 1 cm above the target. If you do this it will be very acurate. the gun shoot OVER 35 feet it actually shoots about 45 feet! over all this gun is great.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! 50+ Feet!   February 17, 2007
40 out of 47 found this review helpful

This gun is amazing! Some people say, "It only shoots ten feet!" or "The scope sucks!". Don't listen. The secret where you put the hole on the bottom works. Now I'm gonna run you through everything you need to know about this gun.

Accuracy:
When loading darts into the clip, put them with the hole on the bottom. When you shoot, if you are holding the gun straight, the dart will soar straight as can be. If you need to nail a target from far away, you want to keep one of your clips with just 1 dart. This one dart should have the hole perfectly on the bottom. If you have all 6 darts in the clip it is harder to make sure that they all have the hole right on the bottom, so I carry one clip with all 6 darts, and one clip with one dart.
The other really important thing about accuracy is practice. Practice long distance shots holding the gun different ways and looking through the sight different ways. You will stumble along one way that fits you best and helps you to have accurate shots. This is what I did and I found a way that nails the target every time (and from 50 feet away). Remember, practice practice practice!

Distance:
Who doesn't want a gun that can nail targets from long enough away to be out of their firing range? Well this gun has it. Most people modify their gun to shoot 100 feet or so. You can, but it is RISKY! I'm not going to put my $30 gun at stake. Anyway, this gun can shoot from 50+ feet away. I'll tell you how.
Now that you have accuracy down, you just need to get your darts to go the distance. First find your target in your scope. Then slowly tilt your gun up. Your target probably won't be visible in your scope, but just trust me. Once you've aimed high above your target, let her rip. Every time I did this I aimed a little higher than the previous time. I got my darts to fly 50 feet! They would've gone a few more feet if they hadn't hit the wall. I shot from the middle of my room, across the hallway, and all the way to the end of the other room at the end of the hallway. This was 50 feet. That should be far enough away to snipe someone, especially if your hiding behind something or you're in a darkened room. Remember, I was firing across a flat area. If you were on a roof, or looking out a 2nd story window, you could shoot even further!

I hope this review was very helpful, and I hope you highly consider this gun. It is a blast.

5 out of 5 stars 50 ft Range Test   February 18, 2007
14 out of 16 found this review helpful

I just tried the 50ft test outside and it worked. I used a 50ft measuring tape. The wind was blowing side to side so it didn't affect the distance, only the accuracy. Well I tried the test from both ends of the tape and both times it exceeded 50 feet. I waited for the wind to be calmest before I took a shot so don't think I cheated. The accuracy would've been much better than it was if there wasn't any wind.

Note: This test was done with just the main piece, the extension part was not used. I don't think the extension part would change anything at all, except for make the gun harder to hold.

Hope this also helps!
Yet again,
-Somebody you don't know
